Hi, my name is Angelica, and I’m currently preparing for my second kidney transplant.
When I was just 8 years old, doctors discovered that my kidneys weren’t working properly. In 2015, I received a life-changing gift — a kidney transplant from my dad. His generosity gave me a new chance at life, and for that, I’ll always be deeply grateful.
Over the past few years, my transplanted kidney has slowly begun to decline. My kidney function is now around 22%, and I receive monthly infusion treatments along with multiple medications to help manage my condition.
I recently completed my evaluation at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, and I’m in the process of being placed on the transplant list. I’m also reaching out to additional hospitals outside Jefferson’s donation radius so I can join their lists as well — giving me the best possible chance of finding a match.
Unfortunately, the wait time for a deceased donor kidney can average 8–10 years. Without a living donor, I will eventually need to start dialysis. It’s something I’ve known might happen again, but it’s still a difficult reality to face.
